CPP Press Release

The College of Practitioners of Phytotherapy has issued an important press release regarding the regulation of Herbalsits:

" Regulation of Herbalists - a significant step forward

The Report of the Department of Health's Steering Group on the Regulation of Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine and Traditional Medicine is laid before Parliament today.  The Steering Group was made up of practitioners and lay members appointed by the Department Health, was chaired by Professor Michael Pittilo, Vice-Chancellor, The Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen.  The Report shows considerable agreement between practitioners of different herbal cultures on the major issues of education and training, registration and fitness to practise.

·         Peter Conway, President of the College of Practitioners of Phytotherapy, a lead body representing Western Herbal Medicine, said  "This is a big step forward towards the Statutory Regulation of these Professions.  I have been involved in these discussions for more than eight years.   Those involved have represented the world's major cultures in herbal medicine, including Western, Chinese and Ayurvedic traditions.   The primary objective of Statutory Regulation is to safeguard public health by ensuring that practitioners are properly trained, understand about potential interactions with modern drugs and know when to refer patients to mainstream healthcare."

·         The Report endorses the House of Lords Select Committee on Science and Technology recommendation in 2001 on the urgent need for the regulation of herbalists and acupuncturists in the UK.    It recommends that Herbal practitioners and Acupuncturists should be regulated under the Health Professions Council (HPC), which already regulates a wide range of healthcare professions, such as Dietitians, Physiotherapists, Chiropodists/podiatrists, and Radiographers.

·         The urgency for moving forward on Regulation of Herbalists has been created by the requirement of the EU Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products Directive for regulation of the over-the-counter market of herbal preparations, which comes into full force in 2011.  At that time, only herbal products with a Traditional Herbal Registration or other Marketing Authority will be allowed for sale.   Registration of Herbalists will mean that consumers will still have access, via practitioners, to many herbs which would otherwise become unavailable.  "

For more information on statutory regulation, please click here. The CPP as a body, is a member of the EHTPA, and members of the CPP are therefore covered by the EHTPA.

Of particular interest may be the following extract:

"The House of Lords Select Committee on Science and Technology's Report on Complementary and Alternative Medicine (HMSO 2000)..... proposed that CAM therapies should be classified within 3 groups. Therapies assigned to Group 1 included the most organised CAM professions where NHS provision is increasing and where research into their effectiveness had either already commenced or was likely to be beneficial.....Herbal medicine, or phytotherapy, was defined as, "a system of medicine which uses various remedies derived from plants and plant extracts to treat disorders and maintain good health". It was assigned to Group 1 along with acupuncture, chiropractic, homeopathy and osteopathy."

One Year On

It's been one year since opening the Hexham clinic and it's been a successful one.

The diary has been filling up with new patients, people are enjoying being able to drop in unannounced on Wednesday afternoons, and existing patients have declared themselves delighted with their treatment. Referrals from local doctors have been received for patients keen to explore Herbal Medicine and it's very rewarding to prove how well mainstream and Herbal medicines can work togther. Gym members and other sports people have become huge fans of the muscle cream they've had for their sports injuries and training and I'm making this on a regular basis to keep up with up demand. The new gift vouchers have proved popular, particularly with the ladies, and being able to pay online through Paypal has been a great advantage. I've also been keeping up my professional development with both herbal and medical seminars and meetings and enjoying sharing knowledge with other health care practitioners.

Mark Costar continues to work at the clinic on Tuesdays, though his other commitments have now grown so that he is only working two days a month. I am also delighted to announce that Sarah Atkinson, a fully qualified complimentary therapist, is joining the clinic on March 1st. She will offer evening and weekend appointments for a range of therapies, including: aromatherapy, reflexology, acupressure and stress management.

Over the next year, we hope, between us, to offer a fully intigrated complimentary health service, tailor made to suit our patients' needs.

I have an A Level ICT student writing a computer stock control programme so that I can be sure of meeting demand, and I'm hoping to add an FAQ page to the website. I also plan to promote Herbal Medicine by giving short talks to interested groups, so please e-mail me if your group is interested.

Thank you to everyone who has made this first year a success, and I hope that in the next year, the clinic will continue to flourish.

If you have any questions, or suggestions, regarding the website or the clinic, then please do e-mail me.

100% Natural skin care

I've just come across a local company starting to sell 100% natural skincare and toiletry products, and as many of my patients prefer to use these, I have added a link to the links page. I particularly like  the look of the gels, found in the skincare section. Simply Au Naturel looks like it may have the solution for sensitive skins and those who like natural products.

Site down on 27/11/07

Apologies for the site not working for one day. All is now sorted and it shouldn't happen again. The wonderful support team at divisionx.com (my hosts) have once again been fantastic and sorted out my problems almost instantly.

No Drop In Clinic Wed 24th October

Due to holidays, Anji will not be working the week of 22nd - 27th October which means that as well as no appointments being offered that week, there will also be no drop in clinic on the Wednesday afternoon. Apologies for any inconvenience.

More Practitioner changes

Dr Anthea Jackson MBBS, BSc, BETD BAF reg., DNN

Unfortunately, after beginning to settle into the Herbal Clinic, Anthea's personal circumstances have changed and she has moved home. This means that it is no longer practical to work in Hexham and so she is leaving to concentrate on working in her local area.

We wish her all the very best for future success and happiness.

We will now be seeking an additonal practitioner to join Mark and I at the clinic.

ADDITIONAL PRACTITONERS

Mark Costar joined the clinic on August 14th, and works here on Tuesdays. Please see the new page, entitled "Mark Costar" for details. This page gives basic information and will be updated more fully soon.

Dr Anthea Jackson will be joining us on Thursdays as from September 20th, initially practicing Bi-Aura therapy ( a healing energy therapy) and then as a Nutiruionist as well.

We look forward to working as a team to provide for your healthcare needs.

8th Sept 2007

ADDITIONAL PRACTITONER TO JOIN THE CLINIC

We have decidied to bring in an additional practitioner to work at the clinic and therefore currently seek a  practititioner whose discipline would compliment Herbal Medicine. They will have the use of the clinic 1-2 days a week and be responsible for their own patients, adding  a new service to that already offered at the clinic. Interviews are currently ongoing.

SEMINAR - HERBS FOR ANTI-AGEING

As part of an ongoing commitment to keep abreast of recent research into the use of herbs, and quality control issues, on May 21st, 2007 I attended another Mediherb seminar in London. This one was focusing on herbs that can reduce the ageing processes leading to the four main killers in this country: heart attacks; stroke; Alzheimer's disease and cancer.

The speaker was the well respected Kerry Bone, and it was a privilege, as ever, to learn from him..

As we age, our bodies function less well than they did when we were young, and diet, lifestyle and genetic factors will influence how our bodies cope with the ageing process. We can't stop ourselves getting older, but we can cut known risk factors and thereby try to ensure that we get to enjoy our later years.

There are key herbs that can help with this, and these are available in liquid or tablet form from The Herbal Clinic, after consultation.

( 24/05/07)

HERBAL TABLETS

I have discovered a range of herbal tablets in which I have complete faith and will therefore be happy to dispense. Mediherb's tablet range cover a variety of conditions and situations, and are produced to stringent standards for a therapeutic dose, which is BIOAVAILABLE. This latter is important as many herbal tablets are too difficult to absorb and too small a dose to be effective. The tablets are not available over the counter, but for practitioner dispensing only. I intend to start stocking them, and think many patients will benefit from taking a tablet rather than a liquid.

NEW CLINIC - READY

The new clinic is ready at last and will open the week commencing January 29th 2007

27/01/07

NEW CLINIC - PROGRESS:

Work was begun on the new clinic on the 10th January, and was progressing well. A couple of hiccups are slowing things down currently, but hopefully things will soon be back on track. We estimate that it should be ready within 2 weeks.

17/01/07

NEW CONSULTING ROOM:

As of the end of January 2007, I will have a clinic situated in the centre of Hexham town. See "My Clinic" page for details. Appointments for the end of January, onwards, are avaiable to book from now. Throughout the beginning and middle of January, I will be painting, and moving into my new clinic. I hope to hold an open evening once it is ready, and will publish details on this page nearer the time.

23/11/06

SEMINAR:

I attended Mediherb's seminar in London, on "Phytotherapy for PMS and the ageing female". This covered PMS, menopause, and the effects of the thyroid on women in the menopausal years. I learned a great deal, and look forward to using some of the knowledge gained to help my patients.

09/11/06

NEW FEES:

I have reluctantly had to increase my fees, with effect from October 1st 2006. This is the first increase in five years and  effectively means that one week's supply of medicine has increased by 50p.

02/10/06

ONLINE CONSULTATIONS:

Due to a forthcoming  re-write of Practitioner guidelines, online consultations will no longer be possible. However, if you have general questions about Herbal Medicine, then please do feel free, as ever, to mail me.

BLACK COHOSH (CIMICIFUGE RACEMOSA):

Black Cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa) has been in the press recently, where it was reported to have caused some incidences of liver disease. The CPP requires its members to inform patients that Cimicifuga racemosa has, in RARE cases, been SUSPECTED of causing liver disease. The view of the CPP is that the evidence base for the association between this herb and liver disease is very weak, and this herb has been used for many years by practitioners around the world, testifying to its good saftey record. Like me, the CPP is extrememly sceptical of the quality of black cohosh products that are available over the counter and there is uncertainty as to whether some of these actually contain black cohosh at all. CPP members only prescribe herbs from specialist suppliers where we can be sure of the authenticity and quality of the herbs used. The suspected cases of liver disease have not involved medicines from our suppliers.
